Oprah Winfrey & The Oprah Winfrey Show

Oprah Winfrey was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to a Baptist family. Her parents were unmarried teenagers. She was originally named Orpah Gail Winfrey, after one of the people in the Bible's Book of Ruth. Winfrey has said that because of problems spelling or pronouncing Orpah, the "r" and the "p" were reversed.[9][10] Her mother, Vernita Lee, was a housemaid, and her father, Vernon Winfrey, was a coal miner and later worked as a barber before becoming a city councilman. Winfrey's father was in the Armed Forces when she was born. After her birth, Winfrey's mother travelled north and Winfrey spent her first six years living in rural poverty with her Grandma Hattie Mae. Winfrey's grandmother taught her to read before the age of three and took her to the local church, where she was nicknamed "The Preacher" for her ability to recite Bible verses. When Winfrey was a child, her grandmother would take a switch and would hit her with it when she didn't do chores or if she misbehaved in any way.

In 1985, Winfrey co-starred in Steven Spielberg's epic film adaptation of Alice Walker's award-winning novel The Color Purple. She earned immediate acclaim as Sofia, the distraught housewife. The following year Winfrey was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, but she lost to Anjelica Huston. The Color Purple has now been made into a Broadway musical and opened late 2005, with Winfrey credited as a producer.

In October 1998, Winfrey produced and starred in the film Beloved, based upon Toni Morrison's Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name. To prepare for her role as Sethe, the protagonist and former slave, Winfrey experienced a 24-hour simulation of the experience of slavery, which included being tied up and blindfolded and left alone in the woods.

Winfrey currently lives on "The Promised Land", her 42 acre (170,000 m²) ocean and mountain view estate in Montecito, California, outside of Santa Barbara. Rumors state that Winfrey was at a party the previous owners were throwing and fell so in love with the estate that she was reported to have purchased it by writing a personal check for $50,000,000 USD, although it was not for sale. Winfrey also owns a house in Lavallette, New Jersey, an apartment in Chicago, an estate on Fisher Island off the coast of Miami, a ski house in Telluride, CO and property on the island of Maui, Hawaii.

Winfrey and her partner Stedman Graham have been together for over 20 years. Sophie and Soloman are her two Cocker Spaniels. She is considered a mother by the African orphans she financially supports. "They call me MOTHER OPRAH. At first, I was like, 'I don't know about this mother thing.' I think the closer your relationships are, they call you mother".[19] She previously dated movie critic Roger Ebert, whom she credits with advising her to take her show into syndication. The relationship of Winfrey and Graham has been documented through the years with numerous romantic tabloid articles often accompanied by color spreads of the couple at home and on lavish vacations. Prior to meeting Graham, Winfrey's love life was a lot less stable. A self-described promiscuous teen who was a victim of sexual abuse, Winfrey gave birth at the age of 14, though her son died while still in infancy.[20] In 1997 a former boyfriend named Randoph Cook tried to sue Winfrey for $20 million for allegedly blocking a tell-all book where he claimed they lived together for several months in 1985 and did drugs.[21] Cook’s claims mark the second time reports surfaced about Winfrey’s involvement in a drug related love affair. In 1995 Winfrey herself confessed to drug use. "And I've often said over the years...in my attempts to come out and say it, I've said many times I did things in my 20s that I was ashamed of, I did things I felt guilty about, but that is my life's great big secret that's always been held over my head,” she explained on her show. “I always felt that the drug itself is not the problem but that I was addicted to the man." She added: "I can't think of anything I wouldn't have done for that man.

Roman Arkadievich Abramovich - Chelsea F.C. Owner

Abramovich was born in Saratov, Russia, into a Russian family, and lost his mother at the age of 18 months and his father, who was killed in a construction accident, at the age of four. He was raised by his paternal uncle in Komi and later by a second uncle in Moscow. He lived in numerous Russian orphanages and by all accounts his upbringing was strict and harsh.

Abramovich attended the Industrial Institute in the city of Ukhta before being drafted into the Soviet Army. After military service, he studied briefly at the Moscow State Auto Transport Institute before dropping out to go into business. He later earned a correspondence degree from the Moscow State Law Academy.

Now the Roman Empire has come to Stamford Bridge, and his arrival has sparked the same contrasting reactions. MP and long-time Chelsea fan Tony Banks has questioned whether, with his big but Byzantine asset portfolio, Abramovich makes a "fit and proper" owner.

Club chairman Ken Bates, however, has welcomed his new benefactor. As well as wiping out Chelsea's debts and polishing Bates' personal coffers to the tune of £17 million, the Russian has promised a further £30million each on new players and training facilities.

He's already blown that meagre budget, in one day spending £24 âmillion to safeguard the assets of Damien Duff and Wayne Bridge. This money is petty cash for Abramovich but, for those on the club terraces, it holds the promise of championship, FA Cup and even European success.

His bottomless pocket in the transfer market means other teams get to enjoy the fruits of his largesse, and any victories for Chelsea will turn him overnight into a local hero. For players and fans alike of the beautiful game, it seems Roman Abramovich has everything to pay for.

Lakshmi Mittal, the steell man

Lakshmi Niwas Mittal (born June 15, 1950) is a London-based Indian billionaire industrialist, born in Sadulpur, in Churu district of Rajasthan, India, and residing in Kensington, London. He was listed in the Forbes List of Billionaires (2006) as the 5th richest man and the richest Indian in the world with an estimated fortune of $27.7 billion and, according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2006, is the richest in the UK, with a net worth of £14.8 billion.

He spent his first years in Sadulpur, living with his extended family on bare concrete floors and rope beds in a house built by his grandfather. His family, from the Marwari Agarwal caste, was from humble roots; his grandfather worked for the Tarachand Ghanshyam Das firm, one of the leading Marwari industrial firms of pre-independence India. They eventually moved to Kolkata where his father, Mohan, became a partner in a steel company and made a fortune. Lakshmi graduated from St. Xavier's College, Calcutta with a commerce degree in 1969. His classmates knew him as a sharp student who was good with numbers.

In 1994, due to differences with his father and brothers, he branched out on his own, taking over the international operations of the Mittal steel business, which was already owned by the family.

Today he is chairman and CEO of the Mittal Steel Company NV, which is the world's largest producer of steel, with steel assets in Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, South Africa, Poland, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, the United States, Ukraine and other countries. He was the Fortune European Businessman of the Year for 2004.

In 2002 he was embroiled in a political scandal dubbed Mittalgate with British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Many suspected that a donation by Mittal to the British Labour Party had led to Blair's intervention (a letter to the Romanian Prime Minister) in a business deal favouring Mittal. On July 13, 2005 it was announced that he had donated £2 million to the Labour Party.

Gigi Becali and his real estate business

Gigi Becali is a business man from Romania.
His family is of Aromanian origin and settled in the Cadrilater, but, following the Treaty of Craiova and the population exchange between Bulgaria and Romania, they had to move to the commune of Sacalaz, Timis County, near Timisoara.

He was born in Zagna, Vadeni, Braila County, as his family was deported in Baragan by the Communist authorities because of their associations with the pre-WWII fascist Iron Guard. His cousins, Victor Becali and Ioan Becali, are also involved in Romanian football.

After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, he bought land near Bucharest, which over time gained in value. However, the key factor that reportedly made him a millionaire was an exchange of land with the Romanian Army, dubbed by the Romanian scandal press as suspicious, as the Army did not need the land it received and the land it gave was worth much more. Becali gave to the army a 21.5 ha terrain in Ştefăneştii de Jos (about 15 km from Bucharest) and received a 20.9 ha terrain in Băneasa-Pipera, in Northern Bucharest.[2] As the real estate prices skyrocketed in the capital, he sold the land to some companies which built some residential areas. This affair is currently (as of June 2006) investigated by the National Anticorruption Department.

After the 2005 floods, he funded with $4 million the rebuilding of about 200 houses in the Vulturul village (Vadu Roşca commune, Vrancea county) that was destroyed by the overflow of the Siret river. Subsequently the villagers wanted to rename it Vulturul Becali in his honor.
